Plot Summary

The Chronicle of Golgotha days is a dystopian novel by the author Sujith Balakrishnan inspired from a true event, happened in India during 1996. Like a road diary, the novel expounds the roughest ordeal of a sixteen-year-old girl abducted and tormented by her captors over 40 days and nights.

Abhaya, a sixteen-year-old 9th grade student, introvert and meagre in her studies, founds companionship with a 30year old man, Babu, a ticket checker and cleaner in a Private bus while she commutes from her home to school and back. Father, a post master in the Government post office, mother a nurse in the public dispensary and elder Sister, Amala, an under graduate student are her family members.
Abhaya, stays and studies at the school hostel as an antidote to improve her academics. She goes home every Friday evening and comes back Monday Morning. Out of her continuing poor performance in studies on one side and the compulsion from her boyfriend to run away with him, Abhaya takes a brusque decision to go with him. On a Tuesday evening dressed up in school uniform, with two sets of casual dress and some ornaments and three sarees stolen from her mother’s closet, she meets Babu and starts their journey together. He advises her to pretend they doesn’t know each other during their journey. When she gets down from the bus, she founds her boy friend missing. Abhaya searches him all over and smell some foul play. The day was getting dark and a lean lady, Jayachechi, starts to follow her. Abhaya plans to go to her uncle’s home but reaching the bus station she realizes she has to walk three kilometers through the interior dark roads to reach home. Perplexed while standing at the bus station, Jayachechi approaches her and introduces to a man, Gurumurthy aka Guru, who tells her Babu met with an accident and will be reaching tomorrow. They convince and take Abhaya to the man’s home where his mother is living.
It was a cheat plot and his said home a third grade running lodge where she is tortured and raped on that night by Guru. She is taken to numerous places, sexually humiliated by various men from all slices of society, Petty politicians, businessmen, lawyers, Government officers …..., over 40 days and nights. As the protracted ordeal comes to an end, she becomes half dead and of no use.

Every day is a new hell for her, oscillating between torture and death, with a quickly dimming flicker of hope that one day she will find her way back home. But will she? What does home really mean to a broken mind?
